Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication
Overview
As part of our commitment to security and H.I.P.A.A., we have added multi-factor authentication using an Authenticator app for your Chronicler account. This gives your account an extra layer of security, and helps to minimize the risk of someone else being able to get unauthorized access to your account.
What is an Authenticator App?
Lenovo provides the following description of authenticator apps.
“An authenticator app is a mobile application that provides an extra layer of security to your online accounts by generating time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs). These passwords are used for two-factor authentication (2FA) and help protect your accounts from unauthorized access.”
An authenticator app is usually installed on your mobile device, but some browsers or password managers also offer this functionality. After you’ve set up Chronicler with the app, you’ll get a code from that app whenever Chronicler prompts you to enter a One Time Pass code (or O.T.P. for short).
Note
Authenticator apps are considered more secure than sending a code to your phone or email address, which is why we chose this option for Therapy Shelf and Chronicler.
How to setup an authenticator app
These steps may vary slightly depending on which app you choose, but the general concepts and processes are the same.
- Go to Chronicler, and begin to login.
- Enter your name and password, and click “Continue.”
- The next screen is a Secure your account screen where the QR code will be displayed.
- Download and install an authenticator app from the app store on your mobile device. Some popular trusted options include...
- Tap the + icon to configure a new account.
- If you are prompted to grant the app permissions to use your camera, click Ok.
- Use your device’s camera to scan the QR code (it looks like a box of little black and white boxes). As the camera captures the code, a bright green box and a checkmark will appear to indicate a successful pairing.
-
What is a QR Code? A QR code is an image that appears to contain a bunch of little black and white boxes (example image below). It looks meaningless to the human eye, but your phone’s camera can scan the code and interpret the information.

Note
If you can’t scan the QR code, click the “trouble scanning?” text below the QR code box. This will give you a code that you can type into your authenticator app. It accomplishes the same end result as scanning the code.
-
You'll now be redirected to the app's home screen, where you'll see the newly added account and a unique One Time Passcode (OTP) that refreshes periodically.
- Enter the OTP into the Chronicler login screen where it asks for the one time code, and click “Continue”.
- If the OTP is correct, your login is successful, and you can use Chronicler as you normally would.
Warning
Do not uninstall or remove your authenticator app after setup!
You’ll get all your one time codes for Chronicler from your authenticator app.
Note
We hope that this article helps you to get up and running with multi-factor authentication for Chronicler.
However, we realize that setting this up can be challenging, so please feel free to reach out to us at support@therapyshelf.com with any questions or issues and we’ll be happy to assist you.
